Course objectives

The objective of this module is to provide a general overview of the materials used in engineering and their basic characteristics. Emphasis is placed on steel and cast iron, because this knowledge will serve as a basis for other subjects. The training will include the internal structure of substances, their behaviour at different temperatures, stresses, etc.

• Distribution of materials.
• Bonds between atoms, crystal lattices.
• Phase transformations. Crystallisation.
• Deformation and fracture behaviour of materials. Creeping and relaxing.
• Production of iron alloys.
• Iron and carbon. Equilibrium diagram.
• Pearlite, bainite, martensite.
• Heat treatment of iron alloys.
• Classification and marking of technical iron alloys (classes and use of steels, types of cast iron).
• Non-ferrous metals and alloys and their marking.
• Metal alloys - powder metallurgy.
• Ceramic construction materials, production, properties.
• Plastics, rubbers. Classification, production, properties.
• Composite materials. Production, properties.
• Wood
• Corrosion and protection against it.
