How to prepare non-traditional teambuilding combined with employee motivation

Teambuildings have become part of most operating companies in recent years. Organizing a good teambuilding is not easy at all. What may be interesting to one employee may not be of interest to another. Within the organizational structure, there are people of different ages, they have different hobbies. If your colleagues are older, rafting and other adrenaline adventures are not a reward for them, but rather the opposite.

Normally, teambuildings are organized mainly for the remuneration of employees, as a compliment for a job well done. It's not bad, but you can get much more out of them. Teambuilding can serve as an excellent tool to strengthen teamwork and increase employee motivation. It connects employees and motivates them to create a positive work environment and a better result. It helps improve internal communication, productivity, morale in the workplace and helps employees get to know each other better.

Employee motivation is a really complex topic. Non-financial forms of motivation such as teambuilding can significantly improve performance and atmosphere in the company. Without enough financial motivation, you will find it difficult.

However, it should be noted that there is no precise guide on how to organize teambuilding that would really motivate everyone. Let's look at a few tips that need to be followed if we want to use teambuilding as a motivational tool:

  • pay employees as much as they deserve
  • reward them non-financially as well
  • provide them with a pleasant working environment
  • give them the opportunity for personal development
  • promote teamwork
  • highlight their strengths - promote their satisfaction and well-being
  • not to highlight their weaknesses - not to reprimand them publicly
  • avoid unnecessary long meetings
  • get to know them - you will find out the best that motivates them

As with work deployment, it is recommended to create smaller teams when building a team. Larger teams face bigger obstacles. Amazon director Jeff Bezos summed it up in his theory: the “Two Pizza Rule”. He says that if you can't feed your work team with two large pizzas, your team is too big to be productive. This also applies to teambuildings - waiting half an hour for air rifle shooting is not funny.

To strengthen the team and increase motivation, we definitely recommend the increasingly popular escape room and other activities related to finding solutions - various games inspired by Fort Boyard TV show. An excellent option is also a sports day or a family day. An interesting possibility for teambuilding is the possibility of connecting with the personal development and motivation of employees or also the presentation of new challenges, interesting projects, motivational competitions and further direction of the company.

Final advice

Think of teambuilding as a full-fledged project just like everyone else in the company. Take the time to prepare it. Make an analysis of your employees, get to know each other during teambuilding. A very unfortunate solution is to delegate the organization to someone who has no idea about what is happening in the company or knows very little about it. Such teambuilding does not turn out well. If you outsource teambuilding for time or other reasons, pay attention to the most detailed description of your company, the relationship between employees and the goals you want to achieve with teambuilding.

A number of companies are currently involved in organizing teambuildings. We don't want to throw everyone in one bag. Sure, there are real professionals among them, but who knows the situation in your company better than you, who are part of it?
