Harmonization of FMEA guidelines published by VDA and AIAG

On the basis of a joint initiative of the representatives of AIAG and VDA, each of which has its own manual for the analysis of possible FMEA errors, meetings of representatives of both institutions were held in order to unify these methodologies. The meetings have been taking place since May 2015. The reason for the unification of approaches was the fact that manufacturers in the automotive supply chain who supply components to car manufacturers in North America and Europe, especially in Germany, had to work according to different methodologies.

This has in many cases led to different production priorities, which also has economic consequences. Of course, double documentation had to be created and staff had to master both methodologies.

The main area of unification of approaches is the methodologies according to which the severity of the error, the probability of occurrence and the probability of detection are stated in the FMEA design, as well as in the preparation of the production process. Another important area of unification is the way in which the overall risk assessment and priority setting is carried out when implementing measures to reduce it.

In the second half of 2017, the main groups of users from companies in supply chains in North America and also in Germany were retrained. These users subsequently applied the new uniform methodology in their own FMEA analyzes and their comments were collected, analyzed and currently being incorporated.

A new manual is expected in May 2018.
