INTERVIEW: What are the mistakes in implementing agile management?

Are you implementing agile project management? Beware of these mistakes!

Agile project management is a mantra that I have been listening to in companies for some time. However, today I would summarize my observations as to why agile project management does not work in many companies yet.

Mistake 1 - An autocratic and highly administrative way of managing a company.

Agile project management is not suitable for every company. If people's management is too structured and procedural, where people do not have the freedom to make decisions, it will not work. When implementing this type of management, I recommend starting from the top - so that top managers know that they have to start the change.

Mistake 2 - Distrust and low level of delegation.

This mistake is closely linked to mistake number 1. The factor of success in “agile project management“ is certainly trust in people. Realizing that you have the right people in the right place.

Mistake 3 - Insufficient or closed communication.

What I hear very often in companies is: “we lack information, communication in the company is difficult“. An effective way to support agile project management is open communication at the horizontal, vertical, but also inter-centre level. The most suitable tools for this are moderated workshops, which in our experience bring companies the fastest results.

Mistake 4 - Expecting process acceleration.

In an agile project management environment, you should focus on the main thing, ie the rapid delivery of value to the customer - internal or external. For efficiency, you should proceed without solid processes and strong structures. Nowadays, it is not possible for us to process the project in a process for the customer and they want to deliver the overall goal of the project within three years. The customer no longer wants or will wait so long. Why? Because the competition is not sleeping and the client demands value. The customer's loyalty is very limited by his needs and especially the time pressure under which he is. The pressure is passed on to you, and if you can't deliver partial results but talk about delivering the finished product, the client will buy elsewhere. It would be naive to think that you are the only possible solver or supplier of a material, product or service.

Mistake 5 - Copying “agile project management“ methodologies from other companies.

Today, in the age of individualization, we still build on the strengths of a particular company, a particular employee, which creates a unique image. If you have work teams set up in this way, the solution taken from others will not suit you. Agile project management starts with choosing the right people for your team - from expertise, through team roles to personality. This is followed by continuous mentoring, coaching and staff training. The continuous process continues with regular staff development through appraisal interviews. Simon Sinek also describes the process as an “endless game.“

A direct guide on how to avoid these five mistakes is the Believe! Teach! Delegate! Thank you!
These are specific tools to let you know who to trust, whom and how to teach, what to delegate and how to show gratitude. We take over at our Leadership workshops. This is how we see you when setting up an “Agile Project Management“ system that is precisely focused on your company.
