VDA stands for Verband der Automobilindustrie (Association of the Automotive Industry). The organization brings together more than 620 German companies from the automotive industry and is headquartered in Berlin. VDA members are divided into three groups: manufacturers of passenger cars (OEMs), automotive suppliers, and manufacturers of trailers, bodies, and buses.
Among the car manufacturers represented by VDA are companies like BMW, Volkswagen AG, AUDI, and Mercedes Benz.
The main idea and goal of VDA are the research and production of modern, reliable, and safe automobiles. To achieve this goal, the association issues manuals and standards for its members and suppliers in the automotive chain, encompassing demanding requirements needed in the automotive industry.
The VDA association also annually organizes the International Motor Show (Internationale Automobil-Ausstellung or IAA), which is the world's largest motor show. IAA takes place in Frankfurt on odd years and in Hannover on even years, with Frankfurt showcasing passenger cars and Hannover focusing on commercial vehicles. Until 1991, the IAA exhibition was exclusively held in Frankfurt, and starting from 2021, it is planned to take place in Munich.
