Green belt is a designation of the level of knowledge and experience with Six Sigma methods.
A Green belt is a person who possesses moderately advanced knowledge and experience in statistical process control methods, commonly known as Six Sigma. Six Sigma is a highly data-driven approach to process improvement. A Green belt dedicates approximately 30% of their working time to activities related to Six Sigma methods. These activities involve either collaborating on Black belt projects or independently leading Green belt projects.
Green belt projects focus on improvements and optimization of processes on a smaller scale (e.g., processes running on a production line, machine, or specific work position) and generate savings in the tens of thousands of euros. Additional activities may include training and coaching employees with lower-level knowledge of Six Sigma methods. Some organizations have designations such as Yellow belt and White belt for these types of employees.
A Yellow belt possesses basic knowledge of Six Sigma methods and typically serves as a member of project teams for Black and Green belt projects.
A White belt is an employee with minimal knowledge of Six Sigma methods and may temporarily join project teams or be assigned simple tasks to support a project.
Formally, Green belts are part of departments dealing with quality or process improvement.
Candidates for the Green belt are typically nominated by the management based on their knowledge. Logical thinking and data orientation should be prerequisites for Green belt candidacy.
After completing a training program that lasts approximately one week, the Green belt becomes familiar with Six Sigma tools and techniques. The knowledge scope covers advanced Six Sigma tools and a sufficient understanding of statistical methods. To achieve the Black belt designation, the candidate must successfully pass an exam and lead at least one Green belt project that resulted in savings of at least $5,000. The certification was issued by an independent organization.
However, it is true that these standards are not currently strictly adhered to, similar to the Black belt certification. Therefore, the focus is now placed on practical experience (project leadership) and the employee's knowledge rather than the certification.
It is common for top management to undergo certification for either Green belt or Black belt. From the perspective of problem-solving, this may not be the best approach because both Green belt and Black belt represent the executive workforce, not the managerial part. Often, the certification becomes merely a formality since top managers may not have time to lead time-consuming Green belt or Black belt projects. It is more appropriate to nominate employees who naturally engage in process improvement in the field for training.
The path to obtaining the Green belt is demanding and requires regular education. Our instructors are ready to help you on your journey to obtaining the Green belt. And what about you, are you ready?
